Betelgeuse is usually the tenth-brightest star in the night sky and, after Rigel, the second-brightest in the constellation of Orion.

This painting was inspired by a trip to Uluru in 2005, where the winter night sky is a sea of stars. Just after dusk once the sun's rays had disappeared, I'd set up a camera on a tripod outside next to our campsite - back in the days of old school time-lapse film exposure and leave the shutter open. Waking up to an alarm about an hour before sunrise to get up and close the shutter which would capture the most incredible 8 hour star track exposures. Red, orange, yellow and white hues beautifully contrasted against a dark inky blue night sky.  This painting is my interpretation of those star tracks.
